Kandhari Kothi

The Kandhari Kothi was originally built by Shahjahan in the memory of his wife begum Kandhari. This complex was initially a garden tomb. The department of education of RBS college presently functions from this compound. The original structure has been replaced over the time resulting in the distinctly colonial style bungalow of early 19th century. The building is located within the premises Ram Karan Singh college. It has open fields on all sides with the junior girl’s school on the west.

The building has an octagonal plan with each side measuring 68’and entrance porch on south. The plan comprises of arcaded verandahs on periphery and rooms inside. The same spatial pattern is repeated on first floor. It is a g+1 structure with a 6’ high plinth. The entrance has a colonnaded porch while all sides have similar facades having semicircular arcades on ground floor and colonnades on first floor. Semicircular arches, twin circular columns, lime plaster mouldings around arches and along parapets are the distinct decorations of the building.

The building shows signs of material deterioration. The most visible signs are rising dampness in walls, microbiological growth on external surfaces and chipping of sandstone. Cement has been filled in places where the sandstone flooring has come off. The entire building has been painted externally.
