Vernacular Architecture

There are several ecologically sensitive zones in India which are host to a number of natural disasters. The local architecture in these areas uses the most readily available materials, making the traditional buildings safe, sustainable and culturally suitable. However, in recent decades, many traditional practices have been abandoned in favour of modern materials and techniques. New buildings constructed without proper knowledge have increased the vulnerability to natural disasters and are unsuitable to the local climate. This initiative emphasizes the need to re-assess current building practices in the light of possible future disasters, as well as bringing improvements in environmental and social sustainability through adjustments between local knowledge and appropriate modern technology.
